Get Connected - Lay Readers
We serve the Saint Stephen's family by reading the lessons and psalms and leading the Prayers of the People during Worship. We also participate in occasional services, such as weddings, funerals, baptisms, confirmation, healing, and other special occasions. We are Chalice Bearers, serving at celebrations of the Holy Eucharist.
Skills Needed: While a good speaking voice and proper enunciation are sometimes cited as needed skills, the most important skills are a servant's heart, and the desire to serve the Lord at Saint Stephen's.
Commitment: Lay readers serve about once or twice a month.
Training Required: The initial training takes about 6-8 hours, and is followed by a brief internship with an experienced Lay reader as mentor.
Financial Commitment: New vestments range from $100 to $200.
How Many People Involved Now: 27 with others in training.
Need for More People: We always encourage new servants to step forward. With the vision of extended prayer ministry at the church under our new rector's leadership we will certainly need new readers.
